Hybrid Japanese and Western Tool Chest

The traditional Japanese design is simple and utilitarian for quick construction and portability. The western “Anarchist’s” style is a much larger and feature rich chest more for living in the workshop. I wanted the functionality of the latter, but tailored for Japanese tools with a nod to Japanese aesthetics.

The main body is dadoed pine panels with maple dovetailed handles. The handles are glued to the sides to lock the dadoed sides in place. Dowels added just in case.

The hinged frame and panel lid is a western design with the Japanese being a novel removable design that is wedged in place.

The lid is opened from stopped chamfers on the sides.

4 tool tills of increasing depth inside, common in western designs.

Rails for the kannas, Japanese planes, on both sides. The bottom is left for longer jointers.

Gratuitous tool porn. Assorted kote nomis, Kunikei kaku-uchi nomis in white steel #2, Tasai mentori nomis in white steel #1.
